Chinese Embassy in the FSM Hosts 2020 Chinese Lunar New Year Reception

On January 24, 2020, H.E. Huang Zheng, Chinese Ambassador to FSM, hosted the 2020 Chinese Lunar New Year reception at the Mangrove Bay Sushi Bar, where auspicious atmosphere of the Chinese New Year were permeated, with the decoration of red lanterns and Chinese knots.

 

More than 100 guests were present, including T.H. Yosiwo P. George, Vice President of the FSM, T.H Ferny S. Perman, Senator of the FSM Congress, T.H. Kandhi A. Elieisar, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, T.H Eugene Amor, Secretary of Finance and Administration, Ms. Ginger Porter Mida, Postmaster General, T.H. Feliciano M. Perman, Lieutenant Governor of Pohnpei State, T.H. Ausen T. Lambert, Speaker of the Pohnpei State Legislature, T.H. Stevick Edwin, Vice Speaker of the Pohnpei State Legislature, H.E. George Fraser, Australian Ambassador, H.E. Robert Riley III, US Ambassador, and H.E. Hidenobu Sobashima, Japanese Ambassador, among other federal and state officials, members of the diplomatic corps, representatives of the private sector, social services, academia and media in the FSM, and Chinese compatriots and contractors of the China-aided projects. Mr. Xu Fan, Second Secretary for Economic and Trade Affairs and other staffs along with their family members of the Chinese Embassy in the FSM were also at the reception.

First of all, Ambassador Huang extended warm greetings and wishes to all the guests, briefly introduced the implications of the Year of the Rat, and reviewed on the major achievements made by China in 2019 in both domestic reforms and development and major-country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics. Ambassador Huang said, under the leadership of the Communist Party of China's Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping at its core, the Chinese government vigorously kept pushing forward high-quality economic growth, promoting higher standard of living and strengthening social governance with innovation. The 1.4 billion Chinese people made unremitting efforts and achieved new progress in the cause of national development and rejuvenation, enjoying greater sense of gains, happiness and security. Guided by Xi Jinping Thought on Diplomacy,we deepened friendship and cooperation with countries around the world, advanced high-quality Belt and Road cooperation, stayed committed to multilateralism to uphold and improve the existing international order, and played a mediating role in various hot spot issues, making important contributions to world peace and prosperity.

 

Ambassador Huang comprehensively introduced the great progress made in the development of China-FSM relations. Firstly, the two sides had more frequent official exchanges at all levels, further enhancing political mutual trust. Secondly, the two sides continued to deepen practical cooperation in various fields within the framework of the Belt and Road, making concrete efforts toward building a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity. Thirdly, the two sides actively promoted sub-national cooperation and people-to-people exchanges, consolidating the social and public opinion basis of China-FSM relations. And fourthly, the two sides kept close communication and coordination in the international arena on important issues like climate change and maritime governance.

 

H.E. Ambassador Huang Zheng emphasized that the One-China Principle represents a compelling consensus shared by the international community, a universally recognized norm governing international relations and the fundamental cornerstone and bedrock of the China-FSM Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Facts have proven that the high-standard development of the China-FSM Comprehensive Strategic Partnership featuring mutual respect and common development has accelerated our friendly exchanges and cooperation in various fields and brought about abundant achievements, which not only serve the common interests of our two countries and bring tangible benefits to our two peoples, but also contribute to the regional and global peace, prosperity and stability.

 

Ambassador Huang pointed out that 2020 will be a new milestone in China's development. The Chinese side is ready to work with the FSM side to conscientiously implement the important consensuses reached between President Xi Jinping and President Panuelo, keep pushing forward the China-FSM Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to develop in length and in depth, and to benefit the well-being of our two peoples even better.

 

To conclude, Ambassador Huang called on FSM friends from all walks of life to join hands with China, in order to compose a new chapter of China-FSM relations that goes beyond the past 30 years, to consult and work shoulder to shoulder with people all over the world to create a garden of hundreds of flowers of the Belt and Road for all to enjoy and to make greater contributions to building a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity.

T.H. Kandhi A. Elieisar, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, delivered remarks on behalf of the FSM government. He extended warm festive greetings to the Chinese people, Chinese compatriots and contractors of the China-aided projects in the FSM. He expressed appreciation of China's full support to the FSM in its seeking of independence in the United Nations, and of the large amount of generous and sincere aids to the FSM in social and economic development over the past 30 years. He reaffirmed that the FSM will firmly uphold the One China policy, support the great initiative of the Belt and Road, join hands with China in implementing the important consensuses reached between our two heads of state to keep enriching the FSM-China Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and make joint efforts in pursuit of the Belt and Road and a Community with a Shared Future for Humanity.

Guests present at the reception all exchanged New Year greetings with each other, and pleasantly watched the video clips carefully prepared by the Embassy showing "Happy Chinese New Year" and picture slides showing celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China and progress in human rights development in Xinjiang, which enjoyed warm discussion and appreciation. Staff from the Embassy showcased calligraphy at the reception by writing and gifting the "Fu (Luck and Happiness)" on red paper. Highlight of the reception came as the Chinese songs, "Jasmine Flower" and "Happy New Year", performed by the "China Club" students from the COM-FSM, and the well-known Pohnpei songs performed by the Embassy staff and member of the China-aided Pilot Farm. Their performance won rounds of applause from the audience.

 

The reception ended in pleasant atmosphere. All guests showed great interest in the Chinese culture, widely appreciated the gift packages handed out by the Embassy staff with Chinese knots and spring festival scrolls in them, and sincerely expressed their heart-felt willingness in further promoting China-FSM practical cooperation and people-to-people exchanges in all areas.
